A remarkable journey from a village to the president's house
In the sun-drenched landscapes of Rajasthan, a young boy named Rai Singh Dahiya embarked on a journey that would take him from the humble sands of his village to the esteemed halls of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Born in January 1963 to Sri Ranjit Ram Dahiya and Smt. Manidevi, his life was marked by challenges—limited resources, no formal education, and the responsibilities of working on his family farm. But what he lacked in conventional schooling, he made up for with an insatiable curiosity and an inventive spirit.
While other children attended school, Rai Singh helped his parents in the fields, working tirelessly to support his family. He never had the opportunity to sit in a classroom, yet he was determined to learn. Using the sand dunes as his chalkboard, he traced letters and numbers, slowly teaching himself the basics of reading and writing.
As Rai Singh continued repairing agricultural machinery, he observed the struggles of farmers who relied on expensive diesel engines. This inspired him to explore alternative energy solutions. He began experimenting with biomass gasification, a process that converts organic material into combustible gas. Through years of trial and error, he redesigned conventional gasifiers to be more efficient and cost-effective, making sustainable energy accessible to rural communities.
In 2009, Rai Singh’s remarkable contribution to sustainable energy solutions was honored with the Fifth National Grassroots Innovation Award, presented by President Pratibha Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This momentous occasion recognized his work in biomass gasification and validated his years of perseverance and dedication.
In 2015, Rai Singh Dahiya received one of the most prestigious honors of his life. He was selected as one of ten grassroots innovators for the Innovation Scholars In-Residence Programme at Rashtrapati Bhavan. From March 7 to March 20, 2015, Rai Singh stayed at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he engaged with fellow innovators, policymakers, and scientists.
Today, Rai Singh Dahiya continues his mission through Enersol Biopower, a company dedicated to developing sustainable energy solutions for rural and industrial use. His journey—from learning ABCD on sand dunes to staying at Rashtrapati Bhavan—is an extraordinary tale of determination, self-learning, and unwavering commitment to innovation.
